DNA methylation and gene expression differences in children conceived in vitro or in vivo.
From: Infertility News
We examined DNA methylation at more than 700 genes in placenta and cord blood and measured gene expression levels of a subset of genes that differed in methylation levels between children conceived in vitro versus in vivo.

Gene Expression In The Fetal Mouse Ovary Altered By Exposure To Low Doses Of BPA
A study posted at the online site of the journal Biology of Reproduction reports that exposure of pregnant female mice to the endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A may produce adverse reproductive consequences on gene expression in fetal ovaries as early as 12 hours after the mother has first been exposed to the chemical...

Dealing with the Identity Challenges of Donor-Conceived Children and Adults
In a recent New York Times Online OpEd column, Ross Douthat talks about how the children of egg donation and sperm donation react to their conception. According to his editorial, children conceived by sperm donation are more likely than adopted children to question who they are, to worry whether or not someone they are falling in love with might be an unknown relative, to question whether or not their parents are hiding important information from them, and more likely to be confused on who is a member of their family or not....Read Full Post

The genetics of blood cholesterol
“Genes, not diet, may increase your chances of getting heart disease,â€Â  says The Independent. The newspaper reports that a study has made an important breakthrough that helps to explain why some people are born with a high risk of heart disease while others seem to be able to eat fatty food with very little or no increased risk. The study behind this news has produced some new insights into the body’s fat metabolism by identifying 95 mutations that affect cholesterol levels, including 59 that were previously unknown. The researchers say that, taken together, these 95 variations in our DNA account for between a quarter and a third of the genetic factors that govern lipid levels. The more that is known about cholesterol regulation, the better positioned we are for developing new drugs...

Human sperm gene is 600 million years old, scientists discover
There is one sex-specific gene so vital, its function has remained unaltered throughout evolution and is found in almost all animals, according to new research. The gene, called Boule, is responsible for sperm production and appears to be the only gene exclusively required for sperm production from an insect to a mammal. All animal sperm production likely comes from a common prototype.
