Is It Okay To Decline Cervical Checks At Midwife Appointments?
I got the, I suppose, inevitable call from my doctor-sister.She was
concerned, of course, with my choice of having a homebirth. She
was, also of course, woefully uninformed about midwifery and its
safety. I informed her. I also informed her of how actually
informed I AM. That this is an informed choice. And reminded her
too, that I apprenticed with a midwife and have been a doula. We
agreed to disagree. All of this was actually funny and pleasant. It
didn't ruffle me or her. She said that she hoped that I wasn't
upset with her for trying to convince me to not do a homebirth. I
told her no, that I thought it was sweet and funny.I mean, she's a
DOCTOR. Of -course- she's going to want me to go to a doctor for
care.I doubt she'll be interested in info I send her to educate
her. But I'm gonna try...
Hospitals Turning Away Laboring Women
There is a law that states you cannot be turned away for hospital
care in labor - for any reason. This is for every
state and every hospital. This is why it is so
appalling to hear the stories of two women claiming that they were
both sent away from the hospital emergency room in preterm
labor. Both went home but wound up delivering their
babies soon thereafter and the premature babies died. You know your
body. You know if you need help. Do not
let someone send you home if you think you are in labor,
particularly preterm labor. Ask to speak to the
supervisor. Ask for the attending
physician. Talk to your doctor or
midwife. Ask for the patient advocate.Â

pregnancy. From the pregnancy test and early pregnancy symptoms to
the first contractions, it's almost a year! Though the truth of the
matter is that you have so much going on that you may often forget
about the whole span of time and focus on the here and now. I have
gotten really good at this. The the issue for me becomes "waking
up" at about seven months and realizing it's only a few weeks
before the baby comes... So if you're like me and like everything
in a quick version, here is: Pregnancy: The Whole Nine Months or
here is the Pregnancy Week by Week version if that's how you prefer
it. How do you calculate your pregnancy: Months Wee...
