Moira's Birth Story
I am posting for the first time here after lurking for a long time. I am looking for some support and information to support my wish for a natural home birth, I will start with a bit of back ground info hopefully I wont ramble too much and manage to get all the important info in.My birth plan has always been along the lines of natural un-medicated home birth with the use of TENS in early labor, birthing pool for labor/delivery, I have used hypnotherapy cds throughout my pregnancy to aid in birthing. I had always said though that if there were any complications then I would transfer to hospital as I am only interested in the safe birth of my child. Now I am being told that I have complications and cannot even try a home birth.I am 35+4 Weeks pregnant with my first child, I am based in th...

Hospitals Turning Away Laboring Women
There is a law that states you cannot be turned away for hospital care in labor - for any reason.  This is for every state and every hospital.  This is why it is so appalling to hear the stories of two women claiming that they were both sent away from the hospital emergency room in preterm labor.  Both went home but wound up delivering their babies soon thereafter and the premature babies died. You know your body.  You know if you need help.  Do not let someone send you home if you think you are in labor, particularly preterm labor.  Ask to speak to the supervisor.  Ask for the attending physician.  Talk to your doctor or midwife.  Ask for the patient advocate.  Make waves - it could save your baby's life. Hospitals Turning Away Laboring Women originally appeared on About.com P...

travelling to give birth in a hotel with a midwife?
does anyone have any experience traveling to another town to give birth in a hotel room with a midwife? this is our plan so far. our midwife is in a town 1.5 hours away, and i absolutely do not want to give birth in a hospital if at all possible. my midwife is completely on board and we'll still be doing a hospital tour in the town we will be giving birth in just in case we do need to transfer. it's a small town so the hospital will be very close no matter which hotel we choose. i'm hoping to just drive there as soon as i start early labor and get comfortable in our room, so i'm not concerned about getting there in time. i guess what i'm looking for is other people's experiences and tips etc. thanks in advance!

HypnoBirthing
Well the apt yesterday was sad. The midwife put me at 1.5 cm, when I've been 2 cm for the past 2 weeks. Hm. I'm assuming it's just a difference in providers (it was my OB that did it the past 2 weeks), but I was still bummed. Everything else was great, though. No weight gain, swelling, protein in my urine or any mention of induction. My next apt is for one day shy of 41 weeks.HOWEVER, I believe I am now in labor. I've had contractions steadily every 10-12 minutes since 9:00 last night (10:40 am here now). Then they slowed down a little this morning (every 20-25 minutes within an hour) so I got up and made brownies for the hospital staff, as was my intention once I went into labor (I was humming through contractions while stirring brownie mix). I also ate some cheese and crackers, sinceI wa...

Midwives being discussed today
So I interviewed a new OBGYN the other day who was highly recommended as being "natural birth" friendly in my community. It was a complete waste of time! I'm seriously beginning to wonder how doctors get away with treating laboring women so poorly (not all doctors).First off she would "allow" me to have a heplock instead of an IV. This was about as far as I got her to budge. I would have to be connected to moniters 24/7 so could only go as far as the moniter (side of the bed in this case), no portable/waterproof ones available, no use of the shower/walking, I asked about alternative laboring positions, but was told I have to push lying down so she can have access to "catch" the baby. This went on and on. I'm so frustrated with my communities lack of options and support for women who want t...
